To make your own cyanotype prints you will need the following supplies. I have also included links to where you can get these items.
Paper: You will need a heavy watercolour paper. I like using Stonehenge Aqua Hotpress (300 GSM/140 lb. Acid Free, 100% Cotton) (also at Opus). I find that using the hotpress paper gives better definition than coldpress. If you are not sure, then you can ask at your local art store. Please use acid free paper and your prints will not yellow over time.
Gloves: you can use latex or nitrile painting gloves or vinyl examination gloves (at Amazon). You can use the nitrile ones if you don’t like the smell of the latex gloves).
Glass: One sheet of tempered glass with no UV coating. This is important because the UV coating can interfere with the exact wavelength of light that we need to activate the cyanotype. The glass needs to be slightly larger than the paper you are using or the edge of the glass will make a mark on the print. You need to find a local glass shop to get this – in Victoria you can get it from A&D Glass.
Hydrogen Peroxide spray – get this at your local drug-store, like you did in the 80’s to get bleach-blonde hair. (you can also order this from Amazon).
Shallow pan or basin for rinsing, 3-4″ deep and wide enough so you can move your paper around when you are rinsing it. (available at Amazon).
