Grateful for Now, Lilly

She makes me braver than I think I am.

She waits patiently when I write or spend the hours that I do on the computer for my business.

She listens when I complain or I’m excited about something.

She comes and simply stands next to me in silence when I miss Ilse, not phased by the tears.

She is as excited to see my friends as I am.

She watches birds in the garden with curiosity, as do I.

Today she went for her grooming and so I did the day without her.

Entering the house having to remind myself she wasn’t there because I had lifted her into the back of the car and driven her to be looked after.

We go upstairs and down steep stairs at the same speed – we both have arthritis in our knees.

As you know, I am practiced at the notion of impermanence.

We listen to the news of the world, as we have her whole life- but these days it feels all the more precarious- the democratic safe, reasonable world we knew…

And perhaps that is all the more reason to stop at a place to check on the leaves and the colours and the state-of-fall. 🍃🍂

To take her picture here to remember forever what she teaches me.

To look around, with curiosity, to stay in.the.moment. To trust good people. Kind people. To stay present. And not hold grudges or regrets or replay things in your head you could have said differently or better. But to be.

Our life, as all lives are impermanent.

We get to choose what we want to carry, how we want to be in this present moment.

And in this moment, I am grateful for being next to you -with your shiny clean fur, watching the sky turn to darkness, hearing neighbours enjoying friends as they connect over dinner with the lovely sounds of children playing.

It’s fully dark now- soon we will see the stars on this still, peaceful evening…
